“I want to make a difference in the world. Giving back reminds me not to take anything for granted in life. No kid should be made to feel different or not included because of situations that aren’t their fault.”

A Bit About Ashlee

Ashlee Brockwell, 17, or Ash, is a member the all-youth Board of Advisors of the We Cancerve Movement, Inc. She was first appointed in 2016, and has since been the project leader for many of We Cancerve’s service projects including the La Magnifique Boutique Spring 2018 Inventory Days and Open House in May 2018.  The boutique provides free clothing, shoes and accessories to teen girls and young adult women who are in foster care.

Ashlee has also served as a project leader for the Toiletries Drive in 2017 and co-project leader in 2018. The Toiletries Drive is an annual collection to provide children experiencing homelessness and in foster care with toiletries and personal care kits. With her help, more than 2,000 kits were provided to more than 10 shelters and transitional housing projects for homeless families and more than four foster care group homes and orphanages.  She was also project leader of the 2018 Threads of Hope, We Cancerve's founding project which is a back-to-school clothing collection that, for years, ensured every child at Harford Family House received at least one complete new outfit for school. Harford Family House is the only organization in Harford County that provides housing to an intact family.

Before joining WeCancerve, Ashlee was a Girl Scout, and participated in projects such as Harvest for the Hungry and planting trees. It was there she said she discovered her love for community service.

Ashlee is the recipient of a 2016 Random Acts of Kindness Award presented to Patterson Mill Middle Team 6 East for completing the most hours of random acts of kindness of the 6th grade east team. She also received the 2016 Champions for Children & Youth from the Harford County Department of Community Service for efforts in collecting toiletries of homeless youth.  In 2018, she was named one of Harford’s Most Beautiful People in a ceremony hosted by the Harford County Department of Community Service. She was recognized for her commitment to various community service projects as a We Cancerve Board Member.

Since overcoming a birth injury that left her with limited range of motion in her left arm, Ashlee feels passionately that all kids should have the same opportunities regardless of their situation. She says, "Kids should be kids and not worry about things that are out of their control."

In her spare time, Ashlee enjoys drawing, journalling, reading and learning to cook.  She also loves to sing, read, swim and play with her cats and dog. She loves children and strives to be a daycare provider. “I love spending time with my family watching movies & playing board games,” she said.  Ashlee is a member of Future Teachers of America and Art Club. She’s also a member of her school book club. She aspires to be a teacher.
