Art with a Heart Microgrant

Overview: The We Cancerve Movement is proud to announce the "Art with a Heart" Microgrant program, a new initiative designed to foster youth-led artistic expression in service to the community. This program will award one grant in the amount of $300-$500 annually to one public school in Harford County, Maryland, over the next five academic years. The grant encourages students to conceive, plan, and execute a service project that uses artistic expression to benefit the local school community, honoring the legacy of collaboration and creativity exemplified by Neisha Jones, the beloved community school specialist who died suddenly during the 2024 school year.

​Purpose: To empower Harford County public school students to use their artistic talents for community betterment, promote youth leadership in service to others, and honor the spirit of compassion and creativity.

Grant Amount: One annual award will range from $300 to $500.

Eligibility:

All public schools within Harford County, Maryland, are eligible to apply.

Projects must be youth-led, with significant involvement from students in all stages of planning and execution.

The service project must demonstrably benefit the Harford County community.

The project must integrate artistic expression as a core component of its service delivery or message. Examples include, but are not limited to: creating murals for public spaces or school space, designing and distributing art kits for underserved populations, producing theatrical or musical performances addressing community issues or leading art workshops for specific community groups.
Application Process:

Application Window: Applications will be accepted each October 10 and due in November 10. Applications submitted outside of these dates will not be accepted.

Submission: Submissions must include a detailed proposal outlining their proposed "Art with a Heart" service project. The proposal packet must be saved as a single PDF file and emailed to wecancervemovement@gmail.com.

Proposal Requirements: The proposal should include:

Project title

Description of the project and its artistic component (max. 500 words)

Explanation of how the project benefits the Harford County community

Identification of the student leader(s) and faculty advisor(s) with school emails noted.

Timeline for project execution

Detailed budget outlining how the $300-$500 grant will be utilized

Expected outcomes and how success will be measured

Letter of support from the school principal or a designated administrator.

Application Period: October 10 - November 10

Award Notification: Grantees will be notified by email before the Winter break.

Project Completion: Projects are expected to be completed by the end of the academic year in which the grant is awarded, or within a mutually agreed upon timeframe for larger initiatives.
Selection Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated based on:

Reporting: Grant recipients will be required to submit a brief post-project report, including photos and testimonials, showcasing the project's impact and how the funds were utilized. This report will be due by June 30th of the award year.
